Operational/Departmental Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship

An operational or departmental manager is someone who manages teams and/or projects, and has responsibility for achieving operational or departmental goals and objectives, as part of the delivery of the organisation's strategy. They are accountable to a more senior manager or business owner. Key responsibilities may include creating and delivering operational plans, managing projects, leading and managing teams, managing change, financial and resource management, talent management, coaching and mentoring.

Level 5 Operational/Departmental Manager Programme [PDF]

 is a development programme designed to engage, support and develop new Heads of Department to meet the operational challenges of leading and managing academic or support teams. This innovative programme is designed for those who may have previous experience of managing team, but are still at an early stage in their role as head of department, service or school.

The programme is designed to be suitable for you whether you have an academic background and are leading a teaching, research or knowledge transfer department; or you have a professional service background and are leading an administrative or professional service - for example, student support services, information technology service, marketing, or campus services.

For employers, the Springboard programme can be used as part of a solution to address issues of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. It also develops talent for the future, helping employers to build pipelines of diverse talent and address issues of the Gender Pay Gap.

The  programme is for men who want to examine both their home and work life in order to identify practical and realistic steps to fulfil their potential. It offers participants  the time and space to address challenges of modern living, stereotypes of masculinity, the challenges facing the 21st century man, as well as mental health, well-being and stress management. The programme supports men to understand the world they are now living in and then challenges their expectations based on historical male stereotypes. This powerful and pioneering development course has been successfully used by over 9,000 men across many different industries.

The programme agenda includes setting goal strategies that work, benefitting from experienced and knowledgeable coaching and support, as well as encouraging attendeed to take risks and manage change.

Authentic Leader

Effective leadership is critical to the success of any team. For those new to a research team leadership role, developing the necessary practical skills combined with the requirements of meeting research delivery objectives can be particularly challenging.  is a two-day online course designed to develop your skills as a research team leader with particular reference to supporting research leaders and their teams in these changing times.

Senior Leaders are a key component of all types of business model where there is a workforce to lead, manage and support. The broad purpose of the occupation is to provide clear, inclusive and strategic leadership and direction relating to their area of responsibility within an organisation. Typically, this involves setting, managing and monitoring achievement of core objectives that are aligned to the overall strategic objectives of their organisation.

Senior Women's Leadership Development Programme

Advance HE’s  is one of the women-only programmes designed specifically for women in senior positions in HE to help them take the next step up or extend their role, profile and impact. It aims at creating more gender parity in senior leadership within higher education. In the programme, they create a safe space for senior women leaders to explore the complexity of navigating through conventional organisational structures and to build foundations for transformation and paradigm shift.

The programme strikes a balance between enhancing technical knowledge of key strategic areas of operation (including institutional finance, structures and governance) and exploring individual leadership styles, leadership legacy, personal impact and developing political skills.
