Can I convert/open an RTF file in Word?

RTF stands for Rich Text Format and is a universal document file format and is easily read by many of the word-processing packages.  It is particularly useful to those using a different word-processing package from those used on campus.

To save a file as RTF

  • Open the Word document
  • From the File button, choose Save As from the menu
  • Rename the file if desired
  • Click on the Save As type choice button
  • Scroll down the list of file types to Rich Text Format (*.rtf)
  • Click Save.

To open an RTF file

  • From the File button, choose Open from the menu
  • Choose All files (*.*) from the Files of type Box
  • Select the file
  • Click on Open
  • Click OK to any messages about conversion
