226What editor should I use on the central Unix system?
The commands described below need to be entered while logged in to the Unix server. Normally you'll see a prompt ending with $ when the command interpreter (or shell) is ready for another command.
For simple text editing, you might like to try using Pico which is the editor that Pine uses for composing email messages. Pico comes with built-in help and context-sensitive menus. To use it, just give the command
pico filename
An alternative and more feature-rich plain text editor is emacs. There are various sources of online documentation. Try:

info emacs
Your files on the Unix system should also be accessible from your campus Windows desktop, so you could also use Notepad++ to edit such files.
